Download Queue Editor's Review

Download Queue is a download manager.

This application integrates well with Firefox, and Safari, but it can run as well as a standalone application while you just provide the download URLs via the clipboard. It provides an extension file for Firefox, while the Safari support is provided right from the program's interface.

You can set from the 'preferences' a default download directory, the downloads removal type, the maximum active downloads, and some other useful settings. Download Queue has also a scheduler for your downloads. It can only start the download, thus it doesn't have the support for pausing the transfers.

When the scheduled downloads are completed, it can do some predefined actions such as quitting itself, or putting the computer to sleep. In order to use this kind of actions, you need to check them from the 'preferences'. If you don't want to use a scheduler, you can check the 'Start new downloads immediately' option which disables the scheduler.

An interesting feature is the hot-key support. Actually, it's just a single combination which can wake up Download Queue even after the main application has been shut down. This functionality is powered by a daemon.

One of the coolest features of this application is the possibility to drag a downloaded file from the program's interface right into a location on your disk. This action has a simple, but useful result: it moves the file right where you drop it.

I couldn't find any kind of option to set the number of download threads for the files, or for each of the file which is in the queue. My guess is that the application doesn't have this kind of support.

Another drawback is the fact that the application doesn't integrate in the same way as Speed Download does. If you would like to send a file to the queue, you need to select the dedicated option from the browser's contextual menu. In most of the cases this won't be an issue. It is an issue if you browse download pages where the downloads are automatically started, but the designer wasn't smart enough to provide a direct URL in case something fails.

Pluses: good integration with Firefox and Safari, it has a download scheduler, you can drag a downloaded file from the interface to any location from your disk where you have write access; it has authentication and resume support, it features AppleScript support, thus you can control downloads via custom scripts.

Drawbacks / flaws: it doesn't provide any kind of thread downloading settings, the integration with the browsers is decent, but it could be better.

In conclusion: Download Queue is a pretty good download manager which in most of the cases is superior to the built in solutions that Safari and Firefox provide. At the moment it has strong competitors such as Speed Download, and download Them All, a free Firefox extension.
